What an amazing weekend packed with killer workouts, productive IFO training, Tech'ing at the Farm and yes..... my first Standby at a Structure Fire. Ok, I still get a little over-zealous with calls.
The weekend kicked off by covering a horse show competition at Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY on Saturday. Growing up, as a child, I spent many summer vacations in Hillsdale, New York surrounded by superb vistas, and a variety of farm animals but had limited access to horses. Fast forward, all these years later, spending time with these gentle giants is truly something that I look forward to. The farm has become one of my favorite venues to cover as an EMT. Look, I even made a new friend.
Even though Princess DJ H passed the mic onto 2073 for some 90's tunes, the Saturday morning training posse crushed their final workout with Rachel! Thank you for your patience with us, Rachel! Hope to see you soon. Welcome Back Doris, we missed you!
I DID IT! Ten flights of stairs in full PPE! Now, for the piece de resistance! Adding the air Pak! As suggested by the captain, "Train slowly. Become comfortable wearing the face piece and the Pak itself before running up ten flights of stairs and killing your knees!" Noted Captain! As two of my favorite ex-chiefs always remind me: "Every journey begins with the first step," even if they are baby steps on the stairs.
Yes of course I saved the best for last! Many thanks to my three firefighter brothers, their constant encouragement, suggestions and coaching, this girl flew solo with her Pak on Sunday. Yup, I said ALONE! Yes, some of the old timers will point out that my hood is missing. Well, it is. Won't make that mistake again.
The air pak was probably the thing that I feared the most about venturing into IFO. But when you are surrounded by the right people, you can accomplish anything. After all, its just air.
Well, that's all folks. Time to grab a quick bite to eat. Its DRILL NIGHT! #FAILUREISNOTANOPTION
